How To Make A Resume

Careful Resume Distribution

When it comes to job seeking many people forget the old maxim ‘quality, not quantity’. Whilst I always advise job seekers to widen their net as far as possible in order to catch as many opportunities as they can, I can never advocate the ‘scattergun’ approach.

Yet that is just what many people on the job hunt actually do. Apply apply apply and hope that a job, any job comes along?

Wrong. If this is your approach, you are doing your job hunt far more harm than good and could be wasting a lot of precious time in the process.

The fact is, hiring managers are human, with feelings, and also, one hopes, a brain in their heads. If you have randomly applied for multiple posts within the same company, they are going to know and they are going to question your motives. This shows that you are uncommitted to any specific career goal and reeks of ill thought out desperation.

You will have worked hard on building your resume, and it’s important to get it to the right people, for the jobs you really want. Sending out a generic CV to hundreds of hiring managers will do you less good than you think. You are effectively just throwing them into thin air and crossing your fingers that they land on the right desk.

Invest some time and effort into making sure your resume is seen by the ones that count, no matter for numbers – in this case –less is more.

If you are applying for jobs online, it can be incredibly tempting to simply click twice and send your resume. That could be the same resume that hasn’t been updated, or more importantly, tailored to the job in question. Print out the information and consider it before you submit a resume that you have tailored to fit the application.

A tailored resume would highlight all your experience and key accomplishments that are relevant to this particular job and organisation.

By taking your time, visiting the employers’ website and learning as much as you can about them, you can create a great cover letter that shows you are serious about working for them, and shows effort and loyalty.

It proves you have enthusiasm for their business and gives the right impression from the off.
