How To Keep Your Resume Updated
If your resume is looking a bit rusty, it’s always good to renew!. September is the month of the year that conjures images of fresh school stationary and new starts. It’s the perfect time to perform a full audit of that vital piece of Job hunting kit. So keep those skills sharp. If you're still new to the job hunting scene, it's never too late to learn how to make a resume.
But I’m not looking for a job! I hear you cry. No matter, because with an economic climate like this, who knows when you will be? With a fresh, up dated and relevant resume, you can hit the ground running if and when the time comes.
Here are some tips to keep your resume updated and ready:
- This may sound too obvious, but please check to make sure that all of your personal information is correct. You may have changed your mobile number or have a more preferable email address since you last updated. Remove all irrelevant details too.
- Refresh your opening statement, or objective. You may have changed your outlook or plans. You may not be directly seeking a position, so wish to be more general or you need to be job specific to a job you are applying for.
- Bring your resume up to date with the new experiences and achievements you’ve enjoyed since you last wrote. Some employers look for anything up to a ten year history. Anything beyond that could be superfluous.
- Take a look over your ‘old’ job descriptions. Okay, so the facts haven’t changed, but they may benefit from a lively language boost or a dynamic rewording done with fresh eyes
- Add any new courses or professional qualifications you have attended or received recently to your education profile.
- Don’t forget to note any memberships of notable associations or groups, publications printed, presentations given or other accolades.
- Lastly but very importantly, take a LONG LOOK AT YOUR REFERENCES. Update and evaluate them. Some may now be irrelevant or their contact details obsolete. Check again!
- Good luck!
