How To Make A Resume

Video Resume - Ligts, Camera, Action!

In a competitive job market, every seeker is looking for the best way to make their resume noticed in order to land that dream job. We’ve talked about ‘Twitter’ resumes, ‘Elevator’ pitches and all the ways in which you can ensure your regular, traditional style resume makes it to the right person. But what about the growing trend of video resumes? Scary thought hey? Sounds a bit like an ‘audition tape’ for American Idol or some such, but it seems that they are increasingly popular, and I can see why.

It immediately answers a lot of questions for the recruiter or HR department of the company to which you are applying. Let’s face it – you ‘on paper’ is not the same as you in the flesh. Time is money these days and by meeting you ‘on screen’ albeit not in person, it saves time and money, as we can get a grasp of your personality, how you carry and hold yourself, and unfortunately how you dress – it is always important to stay respectful and appropriate – whoever you work for.

So it seems that video resumes are definitely an asset. But only if they are done correctly. Video resumes can work in your favour or damage your career. If you do choose to make one, keep it professional.

If a video resume is something you are thinking about, here are some things to consider:

  • Keep it no longer than three minutes
  • Wear a suit (this applies whether you are male or female)
  • Keep jewellery to a minimum (guy's freshly shaved)
  • Don't make big gestures
  • Keep it business like. Talk about your resume only.
  • Have a person interview you
  • Don't do anything foolish or unprofessional
  • Don't have long answers. Keep it short, but detailed enough

If you choose to make one, you'll need to figure out how. If you are tech savvy, save your money and make it yourself. And if you are worried about privacy, I suggest not posting on YouTube.

If you are committed to your career path – I firmly believe, like social media, as long as you keep it appropriate and professional, anything is worth a try. Video resumes? Why not?
